This game should give us the first inklings of what life under Mourinho is going to be like for Man United and their fans. Almost two months have now passed since they beat Crystal Palace to win the FA Cup in May, a result that was swiftly followed by the unceremonious dismissal of Louis Van Gaal. Although clearly pre-season is primarily about fitness you sense there are a few United players that are playing for their futures under the new boss and there’s one or two who will be keen to prove a point early on and this game presents them with the first opportunity.

Wigan enjoyed a fine season last term when they cruised to promotion from League One. There has been no extended summer breaks though as they gear up for life in the Championship and they’ve already played two pre-season friendlies so they should be slightly ahead of Man United in terms of fitness. Both friendlies finished 0-0 against Sporting Braga and Chester but there will be much greater interest in this game and their clash with Liverpool the following day.

Wigan are either brave or foolish for scheduling two matches in as many days against English football’s two most successful clubs. Clearly they are going to have to chop and change a fair bit so we could see a mix of regulars and reserve players here. United are still without quite a few players who were involved at Euro 2016 but it will still be a pretty strong team they send out. They have 6 days after this until they face Borussia Dortmund and with so many players hoping to impress their new coach, a strong showing is likely from the Red Devils and backing Man United to Win at 8/11 looks to offer good value.

Man United have a stunning record against Wigan, winning 17 of the last 18 meetings. The sides last met in the 2013 Community Shield, a game the Red Devils won 2-0.

Wigan have gone 3 games without a win. Since winning the League 1 title, they lost 4-1 at home to Barnsley on the final day of last season and have drawn two friendlies 0-0. United have won 6 of their last 9 games.

Wigan are likely to play a mix of first-choice and back-up players given they have another big match against Liverpool the following day.

Luke Shaw is set to make his long awaited comeback here as Jose Mourinho picks his first Man United team. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney and David de Gea are still away on holiday. Youngsters Axel Tuazebe and Tyrell Warren could be involved while Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly are set to make their debuts.
